Now import the file back into Client Connection Manager. Then you will be demanded to overwrite the current one. If it has the same name, then overwrite it. In this way, you will receive a client that has the correct port settings to match your Terminal Server settings.

Shutdown.exe is available on the Microsoft Windows 2000 Resource Kit CD-ROM only. It is a command-line tool that you can use to shut down or to restart a local or remote computer that is running Windows 2000 or Windows NT 4.0. If you want to schedule a computer to shut down and restart at a specific time, use Shutdown.exe in combination with the at command or Task Scheduler.

Description of the Shutdown.exe Tool
Shutdown.exe uses the following syntax:
shutdown \\computername /l /a /r /t:xx "msg" /y /c
You can use the following switches with Shutdown.exe:

* \\computername: Use this switch to specify the remote computer to shut down. If you omit this parameter, the local computer name is used.
* /l (Note that this is a lowercase "L" character): Use this switch to shut down the local computer
* /a: Use this switch to quit a shutdown operation. You can do this only during the time-out period. If you use this switch, all other parameters are ignored.
* /r: Use this switch to restart the computer instead of fully shutting it down.
* /t:xx: Use this switch to specify the time (in seconds) after which the computer is shut down. The default is 20 seconds.
* "msg": Use this switch to specify a message during the shutdown process. The maximum number of characters that the message can contain is 127.
* /y: Use this switch to force a "yes" answer to all queries from the computer.
* /c: Use this switch quit all running programs. If you use this switch, Windows forces all programs that are running to quit. The option to save any data that may have changed is ignored. This can result in data loss in any programs for which data is not previously saved.

How to Put Files on a Remote Server?

You can put files from the local site to the remote site, generally without changing the file's checked out status.

There are two common situations in which you might use the Put command instead of Check In:

You're not in a collaborative environment and you aren't using the Check In/Check Out system.

You want to put the current version of the file on the server but you're going to keep editing it.

NOTE

If you put a file that didn't previously exist on the remote site and you're using the Check In/Check Out system, the file is copied to the remote site and is then checked out to you so that you can continue editing.

You can use the Files panel or the Document window to put files. Dreamweaver creates a log of file activity during the transfer. To view or save this log, see Managing file transfers.

Dreamweaver also records all FTP file transfer activity. If an error occurs when you are transferring a file using FTP, the Site FTP log can help you determine the problem.

To put files on a remote or testing server using the Files panel:

In the Files panel (Window > Files), select the files to upload.
Usually you select these in the Local view, but you may select the corresponding files in the Remote view if you prefer.

NOTE

To put only those files for which the local version is more recent than the remote version, see Synchronizing the files on your local and remote sites.
Do one of the following to put the file:
- Click the Put button in the Files panel toolbar.
- Right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Macintosh) the file in the Files panel, then select Put from the context menu.

If a dialog box appears, click Yes to save the file or No to put the previously saved version on the remote server.

NOTE

If you do not save the file, any changes you've made since the last time you saved will not be put onto the remote server. However, the file remains open, so you can still save the changes after putting the file on the server if you want.

The Dependent Files dialog box appears.

To upload dependent files, click Yes; to skip them, click No.

NOTE

If the remote site already contains copies of the dependent files, click No.

To stop the file transfer click the Cancel button in the status dialog box. The transfer may not stop immediately.

To put files on a remote server using the Document window:

Make sure the document is active in the Document window.

Do one of the following to put the file:

Select Site > Put.
Click the File Management icon in the Document window toolbar, then select Put from the pop-up menu.

NOTE

If the current file is not part of the current site in the Files panel, Dreamweaver attempts to determine which locally defined site the current file belongs to. If the current file belongs to only one local site, Dreamweaver opens that site, then performs the Put operation.

To display the FTP log:

Click the Options menu in the upper-right corner of the Files panel, then select View > Site FTP Log.

RealVNC has launched an update to its software for remotely accessing and controlling computers, VNC Enterprise Edition 4.5. Users can view the desktop and control a different computer from within a web browser. The latest version features improved speed and performance, along with support for cross-platform printing and international characters. The company also enhanced the cross-platform chat function.

The new printing options allow users to print documents from a remote machine to the local default printer listed on the VNC Viewer. Improvements to the language functions include better handling of non-English/U.S keyboards and the ability to copy and paste all characters from each language. Users can also transfer content that contains international characters in the file name.

The chat function provides a simple channel of communication between users, with options to start a session from either end. The update also provides an option to launch programs from an icon in the VNC Viewer toolbar, while the server notifies users of incoming connections as a security precaution.

VNC Enterprise Edition 4.5 is compatible with Mac OS X 10.4 or higher, Linux, Solaris, or Windows 2000 through Vista, and can be purchased for $50 per license.

External hard drives and network-attached storage are local ways to back up your files to a physical drive that lives outside your PC. Since network-attached storage devices are typically for the home networker with multiple computers to safeguard from data loss, most people looking for a basic backup option will lean toward external hard drives.

After purchasing an external drive, you'll just plug it into your computer to get started. Online backup software

Since Microsoft is responsible for your Windows PC, it makes sense that it should take some accountability for your data backups. With Vista, Microsoft does just that with its Windows Backup and Restore Center. Unfortunately, this is only available for Vista Business and Vista Ultimate users.

However, anyone with a Windows Live ID can take advantage of the 25 free gigabytes of storage handed out in Microsoft's Windows Live Skydrive, which also has a sharing aspect.

For total hard-drive backups, you're better off with an unlimited online backup service that encrypts your data. These have a software component that downloads a small client to your computer and uses that as the gatekeeper between your data and the Web. These typically take several hours to scan and upload your data at the first install. After that, they'll only back up changes to your files at intervals throughout the day or week; the programs run in the background.

Hard drive versus online backup

We've looked at hardware and software backup solutions, but which is the best method? As usual, it's not that clear-cut. Convenience, price per gigabyte, and ease of use comprise the main decision-making factors. On one hand, a hard drive carries a one-time fee, usually between $80 and $200 for 350GB of storage or greater. You own it for life. But on the other hand, you'll need to initiate backups manually as the contents of your hard drive change. Since the external hard drive is physical, if you lose your hard drive to flood, fire, or theft, you've lost your data for good. That also goes for images of your disk drive and files you've burned to CDs.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, California (Reuters) - Google Inc is challenging Microsoft Corp with its own Web browser that lets users run many applications that once worked only when installed on local PCs, executives said on Tuesday.

Google introduced a public trial version of its new browser software, Chrome, which is designed to handle not just text and graphics, but more complex computer programs.

Chrome, available in 43 languages in 100 countries at www.google.com/chrome, has been designed to download software and Web pages faster than existing browsers. It even allows users to keep working when one of its windows crashes.

This represents Google's long-anticipated head-on attack on Microsoft and its Internet Explorer, which has three-quarters of the Web-browsing market. Google has backed Mozilla Corp's Firefox browser, which holds about 18 percent of the market.

Google engineers and executives call Chrome a "fresh take on the browser," a 15-year-old technology that is supplanting 25-year-old desktop software as the basic way users interact with computers.

"You actually spend more time in your browser than you do in your car," said Brian Rakowski, group product manager for Google's browser project.

Chrome was seen by analysts as partly a defensive move due to Google's fear that the recently upgraded Internet Explorer 8 (IE 8) could be used to lock out Google. Google's core business of Web search and related advertising depends on browsers.

A Microsoft executive said IE 8 gives users control over how and where they navigate, improves their day-to-day browsing experience, and keeps people safe from new security threats. "Microsoft understands that Web browsing is crucially important for hundreds of millions of people, which is why we invest in Internet Explorer so heavily," Dean Hachamovitch, general manager of Internet Explorer, said in a statement.

CHALLENGE TO MICROSOFT WINDOWS?

Google co-founder Sergey Brin said Chrome was designed to address the shift to using software from within a Web browser rather than as locally installed computer applications running inside Microsoft Windows or some other operating system.

"I think operating systems are kind of an old way to think of the world," Brin told a group of reporters after the news conference at Google's Mountain View, California headquarters. "They have become kind of bulky, they have to do lots and lots of different (legacy) things."

Google believes any task done in a standalone desktop computer application can be delivered via the Web and Chrome is its bet that software applications can be run via a browser.

"We (Web users) want a very lightweight, fast engine for running applications," Brin said.

"The kind of things you want to have running standalone (on a computer) are shrinking," he said, adding that he still edits photos on his computer rather than using a Web program.

GOOGLE BORROWS FROM APPLE, FIREFOX

Chrome borrows liberally from other browsers running open-source software code, including Apple Inc and Firefox, and company officials said they planned to fully share Chrome code with other developers. "We have borrowed good ideas from others," Google Vice President of Product Management Sindar Pichai said. "Our goal here was to bring our point of view, but do it in a very open way."

Because Chrome relies on Apple's open-source WebKit software for rendering Web pages, it can run any application that runs on Apple's Safari Web browser, Pichai said.

"If you are a webmaster, and your site works in Apple Safari then it will work very well in Google Chrome," he said.

Greg Sterling, a Web analyst with Sterling Market Intelligence, said Google's entry into the browser market has echoes of the bruising "browser wars" of the late 1990s, when Microsoft crushed Web pioneer Netscape Communications.

But while the competition between Microsoft and Google is likely to produce many improvements for consumers, the likely fallout from the battle will be other browser makers that have only recently begun to pry market share away from Microsoft.

Sterling said Firefox could become a victim of "friendly fire" from Google as many of its users are the same early adopters who are most likely to switch and try a new browser.

"Firefox has softened up and paved the way for Google. Without Firefox, Chrome would not be possible," Sterling said.

Brin said Google planned to continue to work closely with Mozilla, whose primary financial backing has come from Google in recent years. He said he hoped to see future versions of Chrome and Firefox become more unified over time.

TeamViewer GmbH today released the live version of its TeamViewer remote vista support maintenance program for Mac. This compact utility, designed to enable remote vista support access of computers via Internet and across firewalls, is compatible with Mac OS X 10.4 and later versions.
